NH House Votes to Legalize Cannabis

New Hampshire House passes cannabis bill

February 26, 2020 New Hampshire

This past Thursday, the New Hampshire House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly in favor of HB 1648.

New Hampshire on the Verge of Legalizing Marijuana?

The NH House voted with a 2/3rds majority to pass a bill which would legalize the possession of marijuana. Additionally the bill would also allow for limited cultivation of the plant.

HB 1648 passed 236-112 and will now be headed to a public hearing before the Senate. However the NH senate has previously rejected cannabis legalization bills.

The governor of New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu publicly opposes legalization, so it will likely be difficult to pass. Should a majority of or 16 of the state’s 24 senators support the bill, overriding the governors veto is something that can be done.

Additionally the governor and all 24 senators will face re-election in November. So they may be more easily convinced to pass such a publicly demanded policy.

Only time will tell.
