Focused on fairness and justice, Illinois treks ahead in their journey to cannabis legalization
Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed the Cannabis Regulation and Taxation Act (CRTA) into law. This occurred on Tuesday (the 25th of June). The approval of CRTA in Illinois officially makes 11 states “cannabis friendly”.
Illinois will become the second state to legalize cannabis possession via the legislative process. This state will also be first to legalize retail sales legislatively. Of course, this comes with taxes on purchases among other regulations.
The Cannabis Regulation and Taxation Act proposes the most progressive social equity provisions in any legalization law that has been introduced. CRTA proposes reinvestment in communities targeted and harmed due to cannabis prohibition. This act also includes measures to prevent those target communities from being targeted again.
